... What it's about.
Teams are commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest Formula One Car of the Future, powered by compressed air cylinders. Below are the stages that the team must follow when completing the F1 Challenge.
Form a Team
Form a 3 to 6 member team, select team name and identity, determine job roles for; team manager, manufacturing, engineer, design engineer, graphic designer, and resource manager.
Business and Sponsorship Plan
The team must prepare a business plan, develop a budget, raise sponsorships, and collaborate and link with industry.
The team uses a 3D CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) software to design an F1 car to the specifications set by the National Rules Committee.
Aerodynamics of the car design are analyzed for drag co-efficiency in a virtual wind tunnel using Computational Fluid Dynamics Software (CFD).
The team uses CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) Software and a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) router to determine the most efficient machining strategies to produce a TWO identical F1 Cars.
Cars are checked and tested for weight, friction in bearings & axles, surface finish types and timed on tracks.
The team designs and builds an informative display showing work through all stage of the challenge.
The team puts together a 10 page Design & Engineering Portfolio and a 10 page Enterprize Portfolioon size A3 paper. They must document all aspects of the project from their buisness stratergy and to the final stages construction of the car.
Team prepares a presentation for a panel of judges covering all aspects of the challenge. There is a 5 minute time limit at state and 10 minute limit at Nationals. All team members must participate.
Cars are submitted to parc ferme, where judges scrutinize every dimension for compliance with the rules and regulations.
Judges question teams members in three different areas; engineering design, pit display, and verbal presentation. At each stage team members are questioned on items such as; how their cars was manufactured or why specific designs were chosen.
Test what the team has worked so hard to achieve, a winning car.
